With their pointy hats and boiling cauldrons in hand, these magical (and often misunderstood) women take over everything from your bookshelf and your television screen to your wardrobe and your home decor. While autumn is generally affiliated with the beautiful colors of the changing leaves, the comfortable return of oversized sweaters, and the iconic taste of pumpkin spice everything, the season is often associated with one other thing: witches. If you’re curious about the real women behind the spooky aesthetic, it’s time you read some nonfiction books about witches, because they’re so much more than the stuff of fairy tales. Fall is fast approaching, which means Halloween will be here before you know it, as will a flood of stories and products featuring broom-riding, wart-nosed, curse-casting witches. ![]()

What is it? Why are they connected? Why were they separated? And why does the world seem to conspire to keep them apart? Twins are close–but Roger and Dodger’s bond is something more…something bigger. Together they feel whole, separated they feel broken. They live on opposite coasts, but they talk to each other and see through one another’s eyes. As children they discover they can enter each other’s minds. One grows into a genius in language, the other in math. Roger and Dodger are twins, separated at birth. Sum it up? Middlegame was an absolute thrill, and I loved it. Some have said it’s horror, but I say not horror. It’s science fiction, it’s urban fantasy, it’s speculative fiction, it’s time travel. This is one of those that’s so hard to describe–Middlegame is so many things. I haven’t been book speechless in a long time. ![]() What did I just read?
